چکیده

We present an implementation of the  -statistic to carry out the first search in data from the Virgo laser interferometric gravitational wave detector for periodic gravitational waves from a priori unknown, isolated rotating neutron stars. We searched a frequency f0 range from 100 Hz to 1 kHz and the frequency dependent spindown f1 range from − × − f 1.6( 100 Hz) 10 0 9 Hz s −1 to zero. A large part of this frequency–spindown space was unexplored by any of the all-sky searches published so far. Our method consisted of a coherent search over two-day periods using the  -statistic, followed by a search for coincidences among the candidates from the two-day segments. We have introduced a number of novel techniques and algorithms that allow the use of the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm in the coherent part of the search resulting in a fifty-fold speed-up in computation of the  -statistic with respect to the algorithm used in the other pipelines. No significant gravitational wave signal was found. The sensitivity of the search was estimated by injecting signals into the data. In the most sensitive parts of the detector band more than 90% of signals would have been detected with dimensionless gravitationalwave amplitude greater than × − 5 10 24. Class. Architecture, implementation and parallelization of the software to search for periodic gravitational wave signals

The parallelization, design and scalability of the PolGrawAllSky code to search for periodic gravitational waves from rotating neutron stars is discussed. The code is based on an efficient implementation of the F -statistic using the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm. To perform an analysis of data from the advanced LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors’ network, which will start operating...

A Decision between Bayesian and Frequentist Upper Limit in Analyzing Continuous Gravitational Waves

Given the sensitivity of current ground-based Gravitational Wave (GW) detectors, any continuous-wave signal we can realistically expect will be at a level or below the background noise. Hence, any data analysis of detector data will need to rely on statistical techniques to separate the signal from the noise. While with the current sensitivity of our detectors we do not expect to detect any tru...

Application of a Hough search for continuous gravitational waves on data from the 5th LIGO science run

We report on an all–sky search for periodic gravitational waves in the frequency range 50− 1000 Hz with the first derivative of frequency in the range −8.9 × 10−10 Hz/s to zero in two years of data collected during LIGO’s fifth science run. Our results employ a Hough transform technique, introducing a χ2 test and analysis of coincidences between the signal levels in years 1 and 2 of observation...

An improved, ‘‘phase-relaxed’’ F -statistic for gravitational-wave data analysis

Rapidly rotating, slightly nonaxisymmetric neutron stars emit nearly periodic gravitational waves (GWs), quite possibly at levels detectable by ground-based GW interferometers. We refer to these sources as ‘‘GW pulsars.’’ For any given sky position and frequency evolution, the F -statistic is the maximum likelihood statistic for the detection of GW pulsars. However, in ‘‘all-sky’’ searches for ...

Noise Line Identification in LIGO S6 and Virgo VSR2

An important goal for LIGO (the Laser Interferometer GravitationalWave Observatory) and Virgo is to find periodic sources of gravitational waves. The LIGO and Virgo detectors are sensitive to a variety of noise of non-astrophysical origin, such as instrumental artifacts and environmental disturbances. These artifacts make it difficult to know when a signal is due to a gravitational wave or nois...
